  1. It must have been a couple of years, perhaps more, between my watching the original and watching this version, but my memory was that this was indeed recognizably a remake. Sure, there were a few changes of plot detail, but it read as the same story. This one has the big advantage of having a more fluent narrative; the original has the big advantage of having a more jagged narrative — in other words, both versions work.

    Williamson was truly excellent in this one, I thought. We tend to forget, IMO, what a good straight actor he could be.

    • I definitely need to go see the original but I’m in complete agreement. I think I enjoy Robin Williams most in a lot of his dramatic roles because his comedy comes out so organically even in those roles. Although this was even starker than many of his other roles.
